6.67 Server files (stand-alone not VM)

So, having worked with the 6.67 VM that is given on this forum, there is an issue.

The VM's OS (Ubuntu) is a very outdated version and cannot be upgraded by how far old it is.

I'm looking to develop a website for my own server that I will be starting up shortly, but I need technologies that do not work with the current version of Ubuntu on the VM given to users.

Has anyone ever extracted the Darkeden files themselves instead of just using the cookie-cutter VMs people use? If so, how might I extract these files and migrate them over to a newer version of Ubuntu?
